You Too, Can Fly!

On December 17th, 1903, Orville and Wilbur Wright became the first men to fly an airplane. On this historic day, they flew four different times with each flight increasing the distance and time in the air. What an amazing accomplishment for two Minister’s sons from Ohio.

This story is an inspiration to me. My own father built an airplane and has loved flying since he was a young boy. The Wright brothers had a dream to fly since they were young as well. They studied everything they could about flight and they practiced making things fly. They overcame many obstacles that others struggled with and this led to their ultimate victory and changing history forever!

The Wright brothers grew up in a home that fostered thinking and discovery. They were encouraged to learn and they grew up solving problems and building things. In 1889 they built a printing press and published newspapers. In the 1890’s they not only opened a bicycle shop, but they designed and began manufacturing their own bicycle.

Do you have a dream or a passion that has been stirring inside you? What is keeping you from moving forward? For the Wright brothers, the path ahead was uncharted. It was ground breaking territory and many were saying that man was just not meant to fly. Yet they kept trying.

Is your dream or passion a business that you have always wanted to start? Don’t let obstacles stand in your way. Is it a funding problem? Learn about creative funding methods by searching “crowdfunding,” or maybe find a way to start your business on a smaller scale with cash.

Maybe your obstacle is that you keep talking yourself out of succeeding. You have the dream, but as you get started you tell yourself that maybe you should just be practical and not try anything “too crazy.” The Wright brothers literally had to build a specialized motor that would be light enough, yet give them the power they needed to get their airplane off the ground. Even with that obstacle they pressed on because their passion wouldn’t let them quit.

I encourage you today, to do something to move yourself toward your dream. Read an article, create a checklist, listen to a podcast or spend time with someone who will inspire you. The time will be well spent. I also recommend that you start reading a great self-help book. You can find some that I have recently read at the Rocky’s Reading List  page on this site. Just move forward today. You need to build some momentum. It will be worth the effort and before you know it, you will be flying too!
