Why I Like to Meet People

I have always enjoyed meeting new people. I can almost always find something about them that fascinates me. This may sound like bragging, but I don’t mean it in that way. My personality type is naturally energized by being around people. I tend to function well in environments where I can interact with people that I have just met or have known for years. I wrote a recent post about how you can identify your own personality type. You can check it out here.

A week ago, I got a chance to meet someone at a basketball game. Jamie Evans and her husband own a local Ice Cream shop in Owatonna called “The Blast”. I have always admired this business because of its simplicity, its brilliance and its fantastic ice cream treats. Since the day they first opened, when they only sold 8 ice cream cones, to today,  in their new location where long lines of loyal customers wait to buy delicious ice cream, I have been impressed with this business idea. I plan to write more about them in the future. For this post, however, I want to talk about meeting the owner.

We happened to sit next to each other on the sidelines of a basketball court as we watched our sons play. Through small talk I learned that they owned “The Blast” and that spiked my curiosity. I asked lots of questions about how the idea came to them, and what they went through to get started. Jamie told me about the long hours and the risks they took, but also about how she always wanted to run an ice cream shop and how rewarding it was. They sell an awesome product, they provide part-time employment for 35 teenagers and they are doing what they love to do.

For me, getting to know people is just a lot of fun. However, it is more than that. It is also a learning experience.  I feel like I benefitted the most from that conversation. Hopefully I contributed to it as well and communicated my admiration for their work. I was able to learn about how they have become successful and that will benefit me in my future. The fact that these two people have found a business that they enjoy is a real motivator for me. I hope it is for you as well. I am c0nvinced that we can find work that fits who we are and what we love. I will be teaching a workshop on this topic starting in January. It is called 48 Days to the Work You Love.  If you live in the Owatonna area, click the link to get more info and see if you would be interested.

Are you getting to know people in your life? Maybe this is difficult for you because of your unique personality style. I still encourage you to learn from the people in your world. Take the time to get to know someone with a different background. Ask someone about their business. See if they will tell you the story of how they started. You will be amazed at what you can learn. Most likely you will discover that they are not that different from you. And if you are at all like me, you will be encouraged and motivated to pursue greater success in our own life.

If you know a great story, and want to share it with me, you can reach me in the comments section below or email me at rocky@workyoucanlove.com.
