“The $100 Startup” – Book Review

There are some books that should be on every aspiring entrepreneur’s reading list, and “The $100 Startup” is one of those books. This book, by Chris Guillebeau, was published in 2012, and I was excited to add it to my list. My goal was to read 25 books this year, and although I didn’t reach that goal I am glad that I got this one done. Here are some of the reasons why I think you should add this book to your Christmas Wish list:

  • You need some motivation to start your business. – I think many people need a nudge or sometimes a push to get something started. This book could provide that push for you. I have always been inspired and motivated by people’s stories of success. If they can do it, I am determined that I can do it as well. In this book you will find many examples of people that started businesses and what they did to provide income for themselves and their families. These stories will inspire you as they did me, 2013 will be your year to finally get started on a business of your own.
  • You are afraid that starting a business will cost too much money. – This is one of the many reasons that people avoid starting their own businesses. They think that it always is going to cost more than they have. Fortunately that is NOT the case. That is one of the main ideas in “The $100 Startup”. Starting a business does not have to mean borrowing large sums of money. Chris focuses this book on businesses that cost around a hundred bucks to get going. One of the best ways to ensure your success is to start small and “bootstrap” your business rather than borrowing money to go from zero to 60 in the first month.
  • You want a “real” business that can support your family. – This book highlights businesses that are earning at least $50,000 a year. It is possible for you to create significant income with your ideas, interests and passions. While not every idea can or should be monetized, we all have ideas that could support us in real dollars if we were able to make them happen. One of the stories in the book is about a guy in Alaska that developed a coupon book that he sold to tourists. Alaska is a desirable, and expensive, place to visit. This entrepreneur found a way to save tourists money and make money for himself at the same time. This one idea became his main source of income.
  • You need information as well as inspiration.  – “The $100 Startup” is full of “how-to” information as well as a step by step approach to solving problems or implementing a strategy. For example, Chris gives a 39 step process to go through when doing a product launch on the web. (this is an area where he has a ton of experience) I know there are many of you that need more than just the big picture. You want details. This book is a great mixture of both, and you will be motivated by the excellent content.

If you are considering a business, you know some who is or should you know someone who should be, I recommend reading this book. While you are at it, I also recommend that you check out his website at www.100startup.com. It is an inspiration and a resource, and you will be glad that you took the time!
