Take a Step Toward Your Future Today

This week a young man from my neighborhood wanted to take action on an idea. Together we have talked about businesses that he could start as a 13 year old. One idea was to sell ice cream treats in a few local areas where there are lots of children. So together we made it happen last Sunday.

With some effort and creativity we hitched the “Snack Wagon” to the back of a bicycle and pedaled into a couple of neighborhoods. An hour later we were $30 richer and quite a bit wiser. We created a plan to be even more successful the next time.

The most comfortable thing you can do is nothing. Watch another episode of your favorite series on Netflix, or read another entertaining book. While you do that, ask yourself how much it impacted your future.

Now I believe that relaxation and entertainment are important. However, hours turn into days that turn into weeks that turn into months, years and decades.

A few strategic steps will get you prepared and confident for your next opportunity. In the case of our Ice Cream sales adventure I had taken some steps to get prepared.

  • I fixed an old free trailer that would hold a couple of coolers
  • I created a hitch for an old bicycle
  • I saved a cooler used for shipping ice cream
  • I bought some inventory that could be sold and had it ready to go.

So what difference did it make? My goal was to try out this idea. For the last few months, when I had some time, I worked on the trailer and got it working. It was free and it made sense to use it. I researched some bicycle hitch ideas and built one for an old bike that wasn’t used much by my children. I basically had all the components needed to make this idea testable.

The last key component was someone who wanted to give it a try. If I had waited until last Sunday to start pulling everything together, it would have been too much and we would have given up. The preparation in advance made all of this work.

There are too many things that will give you an excuse to do nothing. Taking action on a business idea can be scary, and by not getting prepared, you  can give yourself reasons to give up. Literally anything can make you decide not to try. The weather, your schedule, what others might think of you, whether or not you will be successful, or even if what you are trying to do requires a permit.  Stay focused on your dream or idea, and take action every day to get prepared for success.
