Successful People Want You to Succeed

The older I get, the more I realize that successful people are very generous. I am not just talking about giving away money, I am referring to how successful people are often willing to offer advice, encouragement, coaching and help. They are usually grateful for all they have been given and freely share with others.

So recently I had an opportunity to volunteer alongside a millionaire. This person designed and built personal fitness equipment for years. Even though he has been very successful, he is willing to give of his time to serve. The cool thing is that most of the time he spends serving is usually out of the spotlight where few people can see. He coaches and mentors young entrepreneurs and is always looking for enterprising people that he can do something new with.

Just this week I had the good fortune to be on the same flight with a friend. He is a very successful businessman as well. He spent a good portion of the flight encouraging and coaching me to take action on an idea. He gave me tangible and specific advice that I consider valuable. The bottom line is that he wants to see me achieve success as well.

That same person also told me a story from his early years. He was a young entrepreneur and was trying to get a permit from the city so he could run his lawn care business. The city was not cooperating until a very wealthy and influential business man from the town persuaded the council to give this man a shot. He got the permit and built a very successful lawn care operation.

Do these stories inspire you? They inspire me. Here’s why:

Successful People Tend to be Generous

Our culture often demonizes people who are successful. They are portrayed as being selfish or self-centered, yet the opposite is usually true. This poor image of successful people can cause us to keep our distance. In reality connecting with a successful person can be enjoyable for them and helpful for you.

Successful People have Overcome Many Obstacles

Experience is the best teacher, but I would rather learn from someone else’s experience. The knowledge gained by successful people is valuable. If you can get past the fear of engaging someone who has been successful, you will be able to learn from their experience. It’s worth the effort!

Successful People Want you to Experience the same Success

Because they are usually humble and generous people, they take great joy in seeing others achieve success. If we realize that, then we will give them opportunities to help us. This sounds selfish, but if you are thoughtful and grateful, there are benefits to both sides of this relationship. Successful folks also want to live lives of significance. It brings them a different kind of joy than achieving success can give. When they can help someone like you, it is a huge encouragement to them.

So have you taken the time to talk to a successful person? Perhaps you could buy lunch for a millionaire. You will find that it is easier than you think. Learn about them. Learn from them. It will do you both good!
