Overcome Fear

FEARFear can be a big obstacle to improving your life, and learning to overcome fear so it doesn’t prevent us from pursuing new opportunities is very important. Fear can also protect us from dangerous situations. For example the fear of getting burned will prompt us to take precautions when lighting a fire or taking a pan out of the oven. However, fear of the unknown can insulate us from opportunities that would bring higher levels of success. Living in fear can keep you from implementing a new idea, taking a different career path or persisting when obstacles slow your progress.

I am currently wrapping up a workshop called 48Days to the Work You Love, and during that workshop, the topic of fear has come up more than once. Two very significant times it was mentioned by guest speakers. Here is what they said:

The first example came from a very successful salesman who works for a growing radio station group in southern Minnesota. When I first met this man, he was a truck driver for an auto parts company. He was very good at his job, but an injury prevented him from continuing. He always knew that he was a “people person”.  That was the feedback that he received from family and friends.  From his own testimony, he said that Fear was the main thing that held him back from pursuing work that was a better fit for who he was. After the injury ended his truck driving career, he was forced to look for different types of work, and he discovered the world of sales. Today he is very successful and it was obvious to those of us who heard him speak, that he was doing something that he loved.

The second example came from a local couple who started a neighborhood ice cream shop. They described their process of dreaming up the business idea and trying to make it happen. It was a difficult process because many people told them it wouldn’t work. They persisted, however, and today run a highly popular neighborhood ice cream shop that has branched into other businesses as well. It was a great story of determination. While giving valuable advice to other entrepreneurs, they said how important it is to overcome fear so it doesn’t hold you back from attempting something that you dream of doing. In their opinion, fear is one of the biggest obstacles to people being successful with a business idea. It prevents you from getting started, or from persisting when you begin to have doubts.

Is fear holding you back from something? Is it a business idea that you think has a chance? Maybe you think that you could be successful in another line of work that would be a better fit for who God made you to be. I encourage you to face that fear head on. Take a small action step today.  James, the brother of Jesus, told us in the first chapter of his book that God will give you wisdom if you just ask. Take the time to as God for wisdom. Get the advice and opinion of those you trust and then act. Opportunities are all around us if look them and keep fear from holding us back.

I am anxious to hear how you have overcome fear in your life. Feel free to leave a comment below. Your story of success will be a big encouragement to others!
