Learn Something New

5108883331_b2d6264873_zI want to challenge you to learn something new.  Invest the time, invest the energy and perhaps even invest the money. I had the privilege to meet a lady who did just that.

In my last post I mentioned meeting two women on a flight back to Minneapolis and how the discussion was inspiring. This is the other woman that contributed to the conversation. She is a speaker, horse trainer and retired officer in the US Military. She happened to be returning from Florida where she had been learning how to “paddleboard”. While paddleboarding itself is amazing, what is inspiring here is that someone from Northwestern Minnesota would pay to fly to Florida for two weeks in the middle of the winter to learn a new hobby! Considering the winter we just had, perhaps it’s more understandable. However, I love it when people take the time to learn something new.

Perhaps it is just certain kinds of people that like to learn, or maybe the love of learning is something that you can develop. This lady is already generating income from a creative business doing work that she loves. As a horse trainer, speaker and instructor, she has created income from her skills and passions and is making a difference in the lives of people through her work. It is clear that she has the desire to learn new things and to take action on those ideas.

So, what are you doing with your spare time? Are you making the effort to learn something new? Never has there been a time in the history of the world, when there was more knowledge available for free. It is endless! Yet there is also no limit to entertainment, and I am concerned that most of us just spend our time being entertained.  When you have free time do you fill it with your favorite music, television shows, movies, or social media? Could some of that time be spent learning a new skill, hobby or idea? Do you only read books or novels for entertainment? Could it change your life if you read a book or listened to a podcast that taught you a skill or motivated you to take action? Henry Ford said that “Most people get ahead during the time that other people waste.” Are wasting your time or getting ahead?

Here are some ideas to help you learn something new:

·         Take a Class or Workshop. I recently taught a workshop on how to find work that you love. The city I live in has a thriving community education program that provides dozens of classes and workshops at least four times a year. Take advantage of some in your area. Your work will likely pay for you to take continuing education.  Use this to your benefit. Check out your local community college for great ideas.

·         Read Four Books this Year. Read two historical fiction and two self-help books. You will be surprised at how motivating this can be!

·         Subscribe to a Podcast. There is so much information out there in the world of podcasts, or “on-demand radio”. It is almost endless. Start searching for something that inspires you. Here are some that I listen to regularly.

·         Subscribe to a Blog. I encourage you to subscribe to my blog, but there are so many others. The ones I listed above are not only podcasts but they are blogs as well. There are thousands, so find something that inspires you.

·         Spend Time with People that Motivate You. Jim Rohn said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with!” Spend time with people that lift you up and motivate you.

·         Take Action! There is nothing like actually doing something. This is the best teacher of all. When you get started you will learn through momentum. It’s exciting and could be life changing.

So how do you spend your time? Are you ready to learn something new? Start today!
