Four Awesome Lessons to Learn from Winning!

I just returned from the best High School Football game I have ever seen! Our local High School Team beat our neighboring rivals 44 to 41. But that is only part of the story! What is amazing is that we were losing, 41 to 7 at the half! Our team scored 37 unanswered points in the second half to win the game. In the first half we couldn’t manage to stop their run or force a turnover. In the second half, we found a way to slow them down and keep them from scoring so much as one point. What an awesome picture of overcoming obstacles to pull out an amazing victory!

This is a perfect illustration of how failure can seem certain, but determination and motivation can overcome the feelings of defeat and success can still be achieved. I think most of us in the stands were thinking that a loss was inevitable. The opponent seemed just too powerful and too motivated and we hadn’t been able to accomplish anything in the first half of the game. Yet the team found a way to beat their offense and a way to beat their defense.

Here are some things we can learn from this incredible win:

  • It is up to you to find a way to succeed! In business or your personal life, you are responsible for making the changes needed for success. In the game tonight, we could see the head coach telling the defensive coach that they needed to find a way to stop the opponent. Somehow they did! You can find a way to overcome your obstacles as well!
  • Don’t give up! Sometimes it appears that the challenge is too difficult. A 37 point deficit sure seemed impossible to overcome. Winston Churchill said, “When you are going through hell, keep going!” Perhaps our head coach had some advice like that for our Varsity Team. They didn’t give up.
  • If what you are doing isn’t working, then stop it! Do something that works! It was clear in the second half that our offense and defense found new ways to respond to their opponent. After being unsuccessful with the long pass in the first half, we began using a short pass route that began producing over and over again.  It was a beautiful thing to watch. This is the same in real life. Sometimes we keep doing the same things thinking that this is the best plan. Are you continuing old habits or repeating old mistakes? Is it time for a change in gameplan?
  • There is nothing like a come-from-behind-win! The thrill of victory is that much sweeter. I remember thinking at the half, that if there was a way to win this game, it would be an incredible feeling. Well, now I know what it feels like. It’s amazing. To see those young men do what was necessary to win was inspirational. There were very few mistakes in the second half and that helped a lot.

I will remember this game for a long time. Not only for its excitement and school pride, but for what it has taught me about life and success! Go Huskies!
