$2000 in One Weekend!

cashIf you needed to earn $2000 in one weekend, how would you do it?  Now I admit, for most of us this would not be very easy, and it wasn’t easy for a teenager that I want to tell you about. The bottom line is, he did it! He earned over $2000 from Friday through Sunday, and I want to encourage you with this story.

In early May this year, we got a record breaking snow fall. In fact, in Owatonna, my home town, we received 18” of snow. It was almost the breaking point for most Minnesotans, but it was for sure the breaking point for many trees and branches in town. We lost a ton of limbs and trees all over town. It just so happened that one young man decided to take advantage of the situation.

This teenager is no stranger to entrepreneurism. He already runs his own lawn care business, so he is familiar with taking care of the customer. Well when he saw all of the fallen trees and branches in our town, he got an idea. He borrowed a trailer, found a chainsaw to use, asked a friend to help him and began asking for business. He drove around town, walked up to houses where they obviously had a “tree problem” gave estimates for removing or cutting up their fallen trees.

Not everyone said yes to his bids. Some had already called a tree service. Others would be doing the work themselves, but many said yes. For the bigger jobs where he had to cut up an entire tree, he would make a few hundred dollars. On other jobs, where he just had to cut up some branches or pick up sticks he only made $25 to $50. What is so cool about this story is that by around noon on Sunday, he had already surpassed $2000 and he still had the rest of the afternoon to go!

So what can we learn from this young man? Here are some principles we can take away:

  •  Speed of implementation – This is the key to many entrepreneurs’ success. He was able to pull something together right away and make it happen. Sometimes the window of opportunity is not open very long. That was certainly the case in this example. He had school and he was competing against professionals, but he used this to his advantage. The fact that he is still in school made him more flexible with his time. The fact that he wasn’t a professional probably made him more competitive with his pricing. He put these advantages to good use.
  •  “Indecision is the thief of opportunity” – This quote by Jim Rohn describes the situation perfectly.  How many times have you had a good idea, but didn’t act on it. It has happened to me many times. I am sure this young man could have thought of many reasons why this wouldn’t work, if he would have taken the time. Instead, he jumped at the chance. It worked out very well. Make your decision and take action. You never know what can happen!
  • Be willing to work – Opportunities like this don’t come along every day, but they do come along. You have to be willing to get your hands dirty once in a while. He earned $2000 in one weekend because he wasn’t afraid to work hard. If you have ever cut firewood, you know how much work it is!

So what is your opportunity? Do you have unused equipment around your house that you could put to good use? Do you have some skills or experience that could be used to earn some extra cash? What about that business idea that has been waiting for chance? I encourage you to take action and make something work. You may be another success story yourself!
